Jose de la Torre

José de la Torre is Dean and Byron Harless Eminent Scholar of Chapman Graduate School of Business, Florida International University. Prior to this appointment he was Professor of International Business Strategy at the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Director of UCLA's Center for International Business Education and Research.
Formerly, he was Professor of International Business and Chairman of the Strategy and Environment Area at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, a member of faculty at the Institute of International Business, Georgia State University, and Research Associate at the Harvard Business School. He has held short-term appointments at a number of graduate business schools in Latin America, including the Central American Institute of Business Administration (INCAE), Universidad del Valle, Colombia and Univerisdad Adolfo Ibañez, Chile. He served as Visiting Professor at the Institute of International Business of the Stockholm School of Economics in 1992 and at the Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, in 1997–2001. Professor de la Torre received his doctorate from Harvard Business School in 1971, following degrees in aerospace engineering and business administration from Pennsylvania State University. He is a member of the board in two different societies: Proeza is a diversified Mexican company operating in the automotive components, foundry, fruit juices and IT sectors and Mhasis is a California-Indian company with a very extensive client base in financial services and logistic industries, providing sophisticated software and system integration. He served as President of the Academy of International Business in 1999-2000.

Selected Publications:
Professor de la Torre is the author of over 50 books and articles, and has produced more than 30 case studies in the field of international business and strategy. He has written on management of multinational firms, the relationship between corporate strategy and government policy, and foreign investment in developing countries. His books include; The Activities of IT-Multinationals in the European Community, EC, Brussels (with Yves Doz and Landis Gabel, 1985); Clothing-Industry Adjustments in Developed Countries, Macmillan, London (1986); and Managing the Global Corporation, 2nd Ed., McGraw-Hill, New York (with Yves Doz and Tim Devinney, 2000). Recent articles deal with the structure and efficiency of multi-plant operations in multinational companies and with the management of international collaborative alliances. His publications appear in the Journal of International Business Studies, the Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organizational Science and other leading professional journals.
Consulting/ Clients:
He has consulted with multinational firms such as Johnson & Johnson, Akzo-Nobel (Netherlands), the Bemberg Group (Argentina), Telecom Italia, Eastman Chemicals, Sonoco Products, British Petroleum, British Aerospace, GKN (UK), Heineken, Hughes Aircraft, Northern Telecom, Mead Imaging, Motorola and Montedison (Italy). He has taught and consulted for institutions and companies throughout North and South America and in Europe. He is Chairman of Perseus Consulting, a Los Angeles-based international business consultancy and was a faculty associate of Gemini Consulting for over ten years. In 1992 he was appointed to the Select Panel on Project California by then Governor Pete Wilson. He has also consulted with government agencies in Europe and Latin America, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, OECD and the United Nations.
