Nicholas Economides

Professor of Economics at the Stern School of Business of New York University


Nicholas Economides is Professor of Economics at the Stern School of Business of New York University and Visiting Professor at Stanford University. He has previously taught at Columbia University (1981-1988) and at Stanford University (1988-1990). He holds a Ph.D and a M.A in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as B.Sc. (First Class Honors) in Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics.

Nicholas is a regular keynote speaker at conferences around the world on emerging strategic issues facing Telecoms and Financial Services Executives and their industries. Most recently he has made presentations to Supercomm 2001 and AT&T on the current state of telecommunications and to the American Bar Association on the future of business and law on the Internet. Selected Publications: He has published widely in the areas of networks, telecommunications, oligopoly, antitrust, product positioning and on liquidity and the organisation of financial markets and exchanges. His research on the economics of networks and its application to telecommunications, computers and financial service markets has been published in journals including the American Economic Review, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Industrial Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Finance, and Quarterly Journal of Electronic Commerce. He has recently edited a special issue of the International Journal of Industrial Organisation on Networks Economics. His book, Telecommunications Act of 1996 and Impact, will be published by MIT Press and the American Enterprise Institute in 2001.

Consulting/Clients: Nicholas Economides has been an advisor and consultant to major telecommunication corporations, including AT&T, MCI-WorldCom, Sprint, Airtouch (now Vodafone), Pacific Bell (now SBC), BellSouth New Zealand, Clear Communications, Electric Lightwave, Pocket Communications (now VoiceStream). He has also delivered consulting assignments to a wide range of clients in other industry sectors, including the Federal Reserve Bank, the Bank of Greece, and major financial exchanges around the world.
