Constantinos Markides

Associate professor of strategic management, London Business School


Constantinos Markides is Professor of Strategic and International Management and Chairman of the Strategy Department at the London Business School. He is also non-executive Director of Amathus (UK) Ltd, and a Fellow of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Professor Markides received his MBA and DBA from the Harvard Business School. He has worked as an associate at the Cyprus Development Bank and as a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society and the Cyprus Economic Society.

His current research interests include the management of diversified firms and the use of innovation and creativity to achieve strategic breakthroughs. In 1999 Costas won the inaugural LBS Excellence in Teaching Award.

His publications have appeared in journals such as the Harvard Business Review, Directors & Boards, British Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Journal. His books include `Diversification, Refocusing and Economic Performance' (MIT Press (1995) and `All the Right Moves: A Guide to Crafting Breakthrough Strategy' (Harvard Business School Press 2000). Costas Markides will be publishing a 3rd book in spring 2001, provisionally entitled ‘Strategic Thinking in the New Economy’, co-edited with Michael Cusumano of MIT. He is contributing to two handbooks to be published in 2001. `What is Strategy and How do you know if you have one? and `Corporate Strategy: The Role of the Centre’ (both published in the FT Handbook of Strategy and Management 2001).


Consulting/ Clients:

He consults to a wide variety of leading global corporations, helping them fast track the implementation of their strategic innovation projects. Additionally, Costas delivers executive development programmes for major international companies including: Abbey National, Avon, Barings, British Aerospace, EMAP, Ericsson, GlaxoWellcome, Honeywell, Mercury Asset Management, Pirelli, Polygram, Unilever and Zurich Financial Services.
