Peter Williamson

Affiliate Professor of International Strategy and Asian Business at the INSEAD


Peter Williamson is Professor of International Management and Asian Business at the Euro-Asia Centre of INSEAD. Before INSEAD, Peter was Professor of Strategic Management at the London Business School, where he also directed executive programmes in Japan and Southeast Asia, and in 1990 became Dean of MBA Programmes. Peter has also been Visiting Professor of Global Strategy and Management at the Harvard Business School. With a first degree in Economics, his business career began in banking with Merrill Lynch in London, Singapore and New York. He then went on to complete his PhD in Business Economics at Harvard University in 1984. This was followed by four years with The Boston Consulting Group working on client assignments in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Currently a Director of the Strategos Consulting Group founded by Gary Hamel.

Selected Publications: From Global to Metanational: How Companies Win in the Knowledge Economy, with Yves Doz and J. Santos was published by Harvard Business School Press.. His other books include The Economics of Financial Markets (1995) which is used both in graduate courses in the US and Europe and by financial market practitioners; Managing the Global Frontier (1994) which addressed the challenges of building profitable business in formerly uncharted markets; and The Strategy Handbook (1992). His most recent article in Harvard Business Review, “Asia’s New Competitive Game”, examined the changing rules of competition in Asian markets with the emergence of Asian-headquartered multinationals in the region. A previous HBR piece, “Use Joint Ventures to Ease the Pain of Restructuring”, recommended the use of joint ventures to release sound, but under-performing, non-core business trapped in corporate portfolios. Other recent articles include "Five Styles of Strategy Innovation and How to Use Them", in the European Management Journal, April 2001, “Strategy as Options on the Future” in Sloan Management Review, Spring 1999, “Successful Strategies For Export”, “The Metanational Corporation”, “Mass Customisation: Japan's New Frontier” and “Diversification, Core Competences and Corporate Performance”.

Consulting/ Clients: Peter has acted as consultant on Business Strategy and International Expansion to numerous multinational companies in Asia/Pacific (China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan), Europe and North America as well as to the World Bank and the Commission of the European Communities on competition policy and regional development. He had consulted at board level with companies like Shell, BP, Nokia, SAP, IBM etc.In the course of this work, Peter has been actively involved in a number of acquisitions, mergers and strategic alliances. He is a non-executive director of several companies including Glenmorangie Plc, Integem Plc, Euronet Ltd, Imparta Ltd. (Chairman), TGM Ltd (Chairman), and Armstong Publishing Group.
